The journey back into the realm of the Lords is effortless. These demigods are cursed to remain in their house to escape their fate. In the third book of the Lords of the Underworld series, The Darkest Pleasure, Gena Showalter introduces us to Reyes, who is keeper of the demon of Pain. Reyes is one of the most tormented heroes of the series. He isn’t tortured like the other heroes; he is tormented because he cannot feel pleasure without extreme pain. And to make things worse, he wants to love a woman who he can’t.
The pleasure and pain in this story are built on angst. The kind of angst that wraps around your throat; that is a story centred around a woman who desires a man, and that man is under the curse that he cannot love her without harming her. The emotional pain is the most enjoyable part of this book.

About the Darkest Pleasure Book
The Darkest Pleasure book follows Reyes, one of the immortal Lords bound to the demons released from Pandora’s box. Possessed by the demon of Pain, Reyes is cursed to experience intense suffering whenever he feels pleasure. Every moment of joy is punished. Every desire comes at a brutal cost.
But even that curse cannot stop him from wanting Danika Ford.
Danika has been running for months. The Lords of the Underworld believe she and her family may be tied to a powerful enemy, and that suspicion has put her loved ones directly in the line of danger. To protect them, she disappears. Yet no matter how far she goes, she cannot escape Reyes, neither in reality nor in her dreams.
Danika’s dreams are filled with visions of Reyes. Dreams of his touch. Danika dreams of a connection that feels inevitable.
Reyes is equally haunted. He wants her with a ferocity that borders on obsession. But claiming her could mean defying the gods and potentially condemning everyone they care about, including their families and friends who might suffer the consequences of their actions.
What unfolds is a volatile blend of forbidden love, mythological warfare, emotional torment, and scorching passion. This isn’t just a romance. It’s a battle between desire and destiny.
The Darkest Pleasure Book Review
The Angst Was Everything
If you love tortured heroes, Reyes will absolutely ruin you, in the best way possible.
Reyes isn’t just brooding. He is physically incapable of experiencing pleasure without agony tearing through his body. That dynamic alone makes every romantic moment ten times more intense. When he wants Danika, it isn’t simple attraction; it’s self-inflicted suffering.
The pain/pleasure contrast is written beautifully. Every touch is loaded. Every kiss feels dangerous. The romance is fuelled by constant tension and high emotional and physical stakes.
And I loved it. The angst was relentless, delicious, and deeply romantic in a tragic way.
Danika: Strong, Relatable, and Protective
Danika surprised me in the best way.
She isn’t a passive heroine swept into immortal chaos. She’s strong, fiercely protective of her family, and emotionally layered. She has every reason to fear Reyes and the other Lords, yet her connection to him feels instinctive and undeniable.
Her love isn’t blind. It’s conflicted. She questions him. She challenges him. But she also sees the broken parts of him and doesn’t flinch. That emotional resilience made her incredibly relatable. And in a story filled with immortal warriors and divine manipulation, her humanity felt grounding.
Forbidden Love & Mythology Done Right
One of my favourite aspects of this book from the Gena showalter series was how seamlessly mythology and romance intertwined.
This series prominently features the gods, and in this particular installment, their intervention intensifies tension in every decision Reyes makes. The forbidden nature of their relationship heightens everything. It’s not just about external danger; it’s about destiny itself standing in opposition to their happiness.
Compared to Books 1 and 2 in the series, this one felt slightly less explosive in terms of overarching plot momentum, but the emotional intensity between Reyes and Danika absolutely carried it. The mythology continues expanding, and I loved how the series’ world deepens with each book.
The Spice Level: High and Intense
Let’s talk about it: the spice is high.
But it’s not just explicit for the sake of being explicit. Because of Reyes’ curse, every intimate scene carries emotional weight. Pleasure equals pain. Desire equals consequence.
That dynamic transforms the steamy scenes into something almost tragic and beautiful at the same time. There’s desperation in the way Reyes wants her. There’s vulnerability in how much it costs him.
It’s passionate, intense, and very on-brand for the lords of the underworld.
Why It's 4.5 Stars for Me
The angst and the forbidden romance of the story were amazing. However, some internal conflicts were resolved and repeated multiple times, which made the narrative feel less engaging and left me wanting more depth in the character development. The ending led me to hope to see some stronger emotional conflicts in the future.
Compared to the other two, this one feels less impactful. It is challenging to pinpoint the reason for this. However, the rest of the trilogy caused me to feel this strange sense of pressure, and this one just fell flat to accomplish that goal.
With that being said, the pacing and the immersiveness of the writing were magnificent.
Final Thoughts
The Darkest Pleasure offers a romance infused with myths and emotional turmoil stemming from them. The story captivates readers with its captivating intensity and captivating storytelling. While the first couple of books gave me a lot of very high emotions, this one does not offer as many high emotions.
If you love:
- Tortured immortal heroes
- High spice with emotional stakes
- Forbidden love against divine odds
- Mythology woven into romance
Then this book absolutely deserves a spot on your shelf.
