The Darkest Night By Gena Showalter Book Review: A Tortured Hero

There are many different kinds of loneliness people experience, which can include hearing voices in your head or repeating the same torture every night. The Darkest Night uses this type of loneliness to deepen the romance, resulting in an achingly passionate love story.

In The Darkest Night, instead of solely emphasizing action or myths, the story highlights emotional pain. The central emotional pain in this story involves Ashlyn’s headspace and Maddox’s guilt. Maddox and Ashlyn’s pain creates a very intimate dynamic. The strong emotional core is what makes the story most appealing. Even amidst the gloomiest, the most gloomy of curses, the story is a strong reminder that even the darkest curses can leave some space for love.

About The Darkest Night Gena Showalter

The Darkest Night Gena Showalter introduces readers to the cursed warriors known as the Lords of the Underworld, immortal men who once opened Pandora’s box and were punished by the gods by becoming hosts to the demons they released. Each lord carries a different torment, shaping their personality, power, and pain.

The story follows Ashlyn Darrow, a woman haunted by voices from the past. Every conversation ever spoken around her replays endlessly in her mind, leaving her exhausted and isolated. In search of relief, she travels to Budapest after hearing rumors of supernatural beings who might understand her suffering. Instead of finding answers, she finds Maddox, the host of the demon Violence and perhaps the most tragic of the Lords.

Maddox lives a cursed existence: every night he dies brutally, only to be resurrected and forced to endure the cycle again. His punishment has made him withdrawn, volatile, and deeply lonely. Yet when Ashlyn enters his world, something shifts. Her presence quiets the chaos inside him, while he offers her the first sense of silence she has ever known.

As their connection deepens, danger surrounds them, from vengeful gods to enemies seeking to destroy the Lords. Amid battles and secrets, Ashlyn and Maddox must decide whether love is worth the risk of further pain… or the key to breaking their eternal suffering.

The Darkest Night Book Review

A Hauntingly Beautiful Romance

Two broken souls finding peace in each other’s company is the most beautiful part of The Darkest Night. Maddox and Ashlyn’s connection seems like a nice touch, considering the type of pain and torture they experience, the emotional void they face, the absence of true companionship, and the pain they feel in their heads.

Maddox’s curse adds emotional history to every interaction. Seeing Ashlyn watch his nightly torment and still choose to stay felt like loyalty personified. An excellent quote that expressed the loyalty praise was, “You are my calm in the storm, Ashlyn. My silence in the noise.”

Main Leads Done Right

Maddox is the definition of the overly emotional, sad paranormal hero. His internal struggle with guilt and rage didn’t feel excessive. The demon Violence does not just define his curse but also his persona and relationships. Ashlyn’s presence, however, reveals a lot of softness to his character that is very layered.

Ashlyn also isn’t passive. Heroism is about holding that fear. The supernatural, emotional, and risky aspects of the situation are all real, and she chose to confront them all. Her vulnerability made her relatable, especially as she slowly embraces the idea that she deserves peace and love.

Ambiance and World-Building

The fort in Budapest is claustrophobic and gothic, which fits the story. The dynamic between the Lords as a brotherhood added emotional depth to the story outside of the romance. Each warrior feels distinct, and the glimpses into their personalities make you curious about future books in the gena showalter lords of the underworld series.

Gena Showalter’s world-building is impressive, integrating mythology and romance. Readers experience the Greek gods, demons, and immortal curses while staying focused on the relationships.

Shining Tropes

This story embodies all the best-loved paranormal romance tropes!

  • Tortured hero/broken heroine
  • Fated mates
  • Found family/brotherhood
  • Forced proximity
  • Touch-her-and-die

Although readers may perceive these tropes as clichés, they enhance the emotional intensity and provide the dark fantasy romance they crave.

Final Thoughts

The Darkest Night is an amazing book. It is filled with mythology that is dark but comforting. The journey of Maddox and Ashlyn is not just about love but about finding peace with someone who understands everything. The book has a very dark and brooding hero and a gentle and strong heroine. The supernatural world is fascinating and deserves every bit of the 4.75 stars.

The book is worth picking up if you like novels filled with their immortals and a bit of romantasy. Maddox, Ashlyn, and the entire brotherhood of the cursed warriors will also be worth the investment.

If you like books by Sherrilyn Kenyon or J.R. Ward, this is also one you will want to read!
