A Dark, Addictive Romance That Consumes You
The Darkest King Gena Showalter kills it at the dark paranormal romance. The danger starts right at page one and doesn’t let you go. Tension is high when the only thing that Sunny and William have is love. Each tiny moment (and I mean tiny) is the build up to the end because we all know that love means death.
But I have to say that the tension made this romance one of the best.
William: Cursed Hero
William is a full-on tortured hero, and I love everything about him. He is powerful and seductive. It is no mystery to anyone why everyone is terrified of him. Even with all of his power, there is an overwhelming sense of loneliness that comes with his inability to love because that would mean the end for all eternity.
To cope, he chose to connect with everyone in the most shallow way. The moment that Sunny came along, he was utterly doomed. It was so clear how bad the situation was for him, and Sunny was the main reason for the downfall.
Sunny: The Best Heroine
A unicorn shifter is the best thing that has been imagined. Sunny is a unicorn shifter. Sunny is also a bad a**. Thank you for making the best heroine!
She is so special! She is strong, smart, and has so many different layers. She is far from being a weak captive and she challenges William and fights her own battles. Not to mention, she is fighting her own curse-like instinct to kill the man she loves, so that brings another layer of complexity to her emotions.
Her relationship with William is amazing. There is a perfect mix of tension with so much emotional depth, and everything was so believable especially with the crazy fantasy background.
The Chemistry & Spice
Let’s talk about the romance and spice… because WOW!
The romance and spice with William and Sunny is FIRE and FANTASTIC. From the forced proximity with lots of stolen glances and moments with intense feelings, this book has it all. The slow build makes the release of feelings so much better, and when it finally happens, it is so emotional, so all-consuming, and YES, very STEAMY.
The romance and spice are actually present, and they enhance the feelings of all the characters. If you love reading about romances that make you want to cry, then this book is for you.
World Building and Depth to the Series
As part of the Lords of the Underworld, this book is part of an amazing series. There are lots of different but interesting stories with demons and monsters which draws even more great stories with varying relationships thanks to the inter- and intra- series connections.
If you are a new reader and are just reading this book, it is still great, and you will like it. But, there is so much even more to appreciate as a long-time reader.
Final Thoughts
If you love fantasy, this book is a must read. The Darkest King is a wonderful addition to the series thanks to the amazing characters and all the tension. I give it 5 stars!
It’s got everything, drama, excitement, and those irresistible paranormal romance elements. If you’re a fan of epic love stories that break the odds of fate and where every second has the potential to be a last goodbye, you should definitely have this book!
