A Dark and Emotional Love Story
The most gratifying aspect of The Darkest Passion is the extreme emotional feeling between Aeron and Olivia. Their relationship is one of extreme conflict and uncontained desire, and it makes their romance one of the most legendary in the series to date.
The complexity of their relationship is highlighted by the angel and demon contrasts. Olivia is characterised by light, kindness, and trust, while the opposite is true for Aeron, as he stands for darkness, punishment, and turmoil. Although their traits are at odds, the two of them feel an emotional pull towards one another that is almost unexplainable. Their love, however, is not something that comes easy to them, and both of them fight hard to restrain themselves due to the belief that their love will lead to pain and suffering.
Aeron: A Tragic and Protective Hero
Aeron is the best hero in one of the most interesting, engaging stories in the Lords of Underworld Gena Showalter series. He views himself as a weapon, not a person, and certainly not one who will ever know happiness.
The most telling of his character’s arch is the contradicting nature of his cold exterior and his true self that lies beneath. He risks the most to save a previously believed person, and that action exemplifies his purpose of existence. Otherwise, he retains the pain that he believes he deserves at any and every cost.
Olivia: Brave, Selfless, and Pure
Olivia is a fantastic heroine, and her greatest strengths are her kindness and courage. Giving up immortality is not a small decision, and it speaks volumes about her character that she does it simply because she cannot bring herself to harm Aeron.
At first she seems slightly more innocent and naive, but each time she enters a more corrupt version of the world, she proves herself to be far more capable than everyone around her expects. Most notably, her compassion and unfaltering belief in Aeron sway him from his almost fatalistic view. When Aeron cannot see the good in himself, Olivia always does.
The greatest thematic strength of the novel is a mix of love and duty. Both Aeron and Olivia are shackled by responsibilities that they never wanted to take up. Their love then, in a way, becomes a paradox. It compels them to re-evaluate all their beliefs surrounding loyalty and sacrifice.

Of all the books I’ve read in the Lords of the Underworld series, this particular angel demon romance book stands out the most. I’ve finally given this series my first five-star rating.
I found this book to be deeply emotional and very romantic, and the author of this book has greatly developed their characters. The emotions are the most intense, the risks are the most severe, and the romance is the most tragic compared to all the other books in the series.
