Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 5-6 captivates viewers with a potent blend of suspense, delectable recipes, and hints of a secret mystery concealed within the castle walls. We all found ourselves speechless after watching Episode 4 of Bon Appétit, Your Majesty. After a drunken stupor, a certain king’s eunuch practically begged Ji-young to whip up some snacks.

However, Ji-young and the king engaged in a previously unheard-of vulnerable encounter. As she tried to take care of him, his next very protective move left many in awe: he wrapped his arms, pulled her in, and kissed her. For those of us watching, it was a kiss that left us eagerly awaiting Episode 5.

Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 5 opens with Ji-young venting her fury on a fish, pounding it with all the anger left from the previous night. The King, nursing a terrible hangover, is confused by her sharp tone. When she asks if he remembers anything, his casual “I have no idea what happened” only deepens her frustration. Before leaving, she declares boldly, “You’re not my type.” Soon after, the eunuch confirms the kiss, and the king starts piecing together his blurred memories.

Tension in the kitchen arises from his majesty’s lack of appetite. Ji-young prepares his meals anyway, and her thoughtful chicken soup finally gets him to eat. Later, Consort Kang challenges Ji-young by presenting her dish, but Ji-young’s schnitzel easily wins the king’s favor.

The true spark comes when the king returns Ji-young’s lost handbag. Overjoyed, she hugs him impulsively, catching him off guard. His shy retreat ends in a stumble, and Ji-young’s attempt to steady him results in both tumbling to the ground, an unexpected romantic cliffhanger.

Scene of the Episode: Ji-young hugging the King in joy, only for him to blush, retreat, and nearly fall, ending with her on top of him. Palace rom-com perfection.

Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 6 begins with the tyrant blaming Ji-young for his fall, though concern quickly replaces irritation when he notices her scratches. She brushes it off as kitchen routine, but the missing book from her handbag introduces a new mystery. The king promises to send guards to search for it after the envoys depart, showing how deeply he is beginning to care.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, a hilarious drunken singing session unfolds after the staff samples a new drink. But lightheartedness fades when the Ming envoys complain about Joseon food. Determined, Ji-young creates black sesame macarons that impress the envoy. However, the envoy raises the stakes, demanding a cooking competition between Ming and Joseon chefs. Despite Ji-young’s silent protests, the king agrees, setting the stage for an intense showdown.

The softest moments come when His Majesty joins Ji-young in disguise on a market visit. She revels in the stalls, while he secretly buys her trinkets, later gifting her a butterfly ornament she had admired. She responds by giving him flowers, a symbolic, tender exchange.

Tension rises again when a Ming cook humiliates the Joseon staff in a chopping contest. With the cooking duel scheduled, Ji-young prepares herself and leaves; the mong cook’s knife is damaged. Another cliffhanger seals the episode.

Scene of the Episode: The king secretly buying the butterfly ornament and Ji-young gifting him flowers. This tender, almost-modern “date” takes place in a traditional marketplace.

Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 5-6: Key Highlights

Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 5-6

Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 5-6 shines in romance, humor, and palace politics. The kiss in Episode 4 gave us a hint of the newfound tenderness the king and Ji-young felt. The King and Ji-young’s embraces, tumbles, and playful attitude transformed physical intimacy from a comfortable state of tension.

Compared to the earlier episodes, Episode 6 embraced a more playful tone, introducing romance into the drama, along with tension. We saw a “softer” side of the king in the market scenes, still a king, but smitten and holding back with Ji-young. Ji-young’s innocence and curiosity beyond the walls of palace life were a rigid contrast to his. However, the competition challenge from the Ming envoy reminded us that the love stories in the palace are never just about love. They are also stories about politics, pride, and diplomacy.

Both episodes also illustrate Ji-young’s development, both in her skills as a cook and as a person. The schnitzel and macarons were more than just food for her; they were expressions of identity, artistry, and defiance, and the king’s moves, from returning her bag to buying her presents, were all signals of a man divided between his royal image and his personal motives.

My Thoughts

Episode 5 did an impressive job balancing the different genres of a romance comedy. Ji-young’s anger made more of a statement than the king’s cluelessness. The market scenes in Episode 6 were my absolute favorite. The king’s disregard for Ji-young’s tenderness captivates me.

It was fascinating how Ji-young was thrown into an international cooking duel. Still, the romance and politics were mixed, so it was cool how the drama remained unpredictable. The palace or one of the envoys are playing dirty tricks, which has been Ji-young’s biggest challenge so far.
