The Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 3 kicks off with the King coldly signaling his commander of Urimwi to throw Ji-Young and her friend into the palace prison. Consort Kang (the Concubine) questions the King if Ji-Young is the one who saved him by stopping his bleeding. And he admits it’s “partially true,” adding chillingly that no one else wants her dead as much as he does. His amused tone sets the stage for the unpredictable power dynamics between them.

The Queen Dowager, meanwhile, is appalled that the king brought back a gwinyeo (white ghost). But before despair settles, a masked man rescues Ji-Young and her friend, only for the shocking reveal that the man behind the mask is none other than the King himself. His warning is sharp: any attempt to escape will cost their lives.

The New Chief Royal Cook

Instead of punishment, the King demands that Ji-Young cook for him. Ji-Young prepares “Haute Cuisine,” a dish so divine that it stirs childhood memories of his mother. This moment seals her place in his mind, not just as a cook, but as someone tied to his past.

But danger lurks. The chief royal secretary orders Ji-Young to spy on the king, threatening her with Consort Kang’s growing hostility. Cleverly, Ji-Young bargains for her handbag in return. Surprisingly, the king appoints her as the Chief Royal Cook the next day.

Consort Kang, furious, pushes the Queen Dowager to challenge Ji-Young’s worth. The Queen Dowager sets a cruel test: Ji-Young must prove her cooking skills or lose her arm. The king intervenes, declaring that if Ji-Young passes, every other cook will face the same fate, ending the episode on a razor-sharp cliffhanger.

Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 4 opens with a high-stakes cooking competition. The Queen Dowager declares that the dishes must embody filial piety, using tofu, doenjang, and soybean paste within a strict two-hour limit. As Ji-Young battles sabotage attempts from Consort Kang and rival cooks, her determination shines. Against all odds, she presents a heartwarming doenjang soup infused with nostalgia.

The Queen Dowager, moved to tears, recalls her own mother’s cooking. Ji-Young wins, and the king spares the rival cooks after the Queen Dowager suggests they could instead learn from her. But palace life doesn’t slow down. The King suffers a fit after meeting Consort Kang and retreats to his chambers. Anxiety grips the royal kitchen; every dish risks deadly consequences. Ji-Young dares to prepare a pasta dish, and once again, the king devours it with silent approval.

Later that night, after heavy drinking, the king’s eunuch begs Ji-Young to prepare food. She finds the king in a vulnerable, drunken state. As she tends to him, he suddenly pulls her close. In a stunning, intimate twist, he awakens and kisses her, ending the episode on a breath-stealing cliffhanger.

Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 3-4

Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 3-4 brimmed with standout moments that made them impossible to look away from. The Tyrant’s double role as both captor and masked savior added layers of complexity to his relationship with Ji-Young. His demand for food in moments of tension showed how deeply meals connect him to memory and emotion, especially when Ji-Young’s dishes remind him of his mother.

The royal politics added extra spice. The Queen Dowager’s harsh trial revealed the brutal stakes of palace survival, while Consort Kang’s manipulations highlighted just how dangerous Ji-Young’s presence has become. Yet, Ji-Young’s determination to fight with her cooking skills and even negotiate with the secretary for her handbag showed her resilience and wit.

And of course, the cliffhangers stole the spotlight: the King protecting Ji-Young in front of the Queen Dowager, her emotional victory in the cooking contest, and finally, the unexpected kiss. These moments balance political scheming with personal intimacy, keeping us eagerly waiting for what happens next.

My Thoughts

Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 3-4

Bon Appétit Your Majesty Ep. 3-4 are where the drama truly found its rhythm for me. I loved the blending of palace intrigue with food as both a weapon and a bond. Ji-Young’s growth was inspiring; despite being threatened from every direction, she carved her place with sheer talent and courage.

What I didn’t love? Sometimes the king’s character swings felt a bit too sudden, from cold cruelty to tender nostalgia to intimate vulnerability. But maybe that’s intentional, showing just how unpredictable he is. My theory: After that kiss, it’s clear their relationship is heading into dangerous but irresistible territory.
