While some shows serve as mere entertainment, others leave a lasting impact long after the credits have rolled. Bon Appétit Your Majesty is one of those rare exceptional experiences. I went from enjoying a light romance about a contemporary woman time-traveling to a medieval setting to being enthralled by the multilayered romance, comedy, politics, and culinary extravagance interwoven throughout the story.
In just 12 episodes, this K-drama has packed in everything I love and then some, all the while serving up a delightful mixture of presentation and symbolism in the food. Of course, there are beautiful scenes and even more beautiful love stories that connect disparate worlds and times. The story explores the enduring passions of longing and love, as well as duty and desire.
The ending is heavy with the promise that love is timeless, yet I found joy throughout the journey, which resembles a bibimbap of interwoven fates and concluding promises.
Bon Appétit Your Majesty: Plot Overview

Bon Appétit Your Majesty follows Ji-young, a passionate modern-day chef who finds herself mysteriously transported to the Joseon era. There, she encounters Yi Heon, a king weighed down by power, betrayal, and history’s cruel reputation. What begins as a clash between her free-spirited modern ways and the rigid rules of palace life soon evolves into a story about trust, resilience, and the healing power of food.
Every episode combines palace intrigue with a culinary twist, where dishes aren’t just meals but metaphors for connection and transformation. Whether it’s a simple bibimbap or a complex royal banquet, food becomes a medium of love, honesty, and courage.
The pacing is one of the drama’s strengths. Each episode balances humor, romance, and suspense without feeling rushed. Even as politics brew in the background, the story never loses sight of its emotional core. Instead of drowning in court conspiracies, it lets those elements serve the larger narrative of growth and love.
Characters & Performances

Characters are the main reason this drama worked as beautifully as it did, particularly Yi Heon. He’s the kind of king history might call a tyrant, but this show bravely attempts to show the man crowned beneath the gold. In addition to love, reclaiming his humanity is also a part of his journey.
The actor, Lee Chae-Min’s performance, particularly in the later episodes, was truly remarkable. The range of emotions he was able to portray, all at once—grief, fury, tenderness, and longing—was spellbinding. In particular, Episode 11 left me in awe. The emotion he showed in that pivotal moment was so raw that it was impossible not to feel it alongside him. For me, he was the heart of this drama and his acting raised it to another level.
Ji-young (Im Yoon-Ah), on the other hand, was a perfect counterpart. Unlike the harsh palace world, she created a space of warmth, modern sensibility, and relatability. I found it admirable that her character was not merely a romantic interest, but rather a fully developed woman with her own aspirations, principles, and challenges. Her role as a chef was not just a plot device either; it was the main part of the plot that allowed the drama to emphasize empathy, resilience, and change.
The supporting characters contributed to the richness as well. The combination of humor and loyalty in Gong-gil, the dignified presence of the queen, and the depth of even the antagonistic characters like Consort Kang surprised me. I think I was most surprised by the royal chief secretary, who I thought was one of the villains but turned out to be loyal, reminding me that deceitful characters in this story had sufficient depth.
Bon Appétit Your Majesty: Themes + Cinematography + OST

At its heart, Bon Appétit Your Majesty revolves around the idea of balance, balancing love with duty, anger with forgiveness, and tradition with modernity. And the use of food to communicate the idea of balance worked out beautifully. Bibimbap, the very first dish Ji-young made, symbolized something of immense importance. Simple, yet meaningful, it denoted the harmony of an ensemble, just like the drama. That dish, tied with a king’s promise, became a timeless symbol of love.
The drama was nothing short of stunning. The brilliance of the cinematography captured both the opulent lushness of the palace halls and the warm intimacy of the kitchens perfectly. Each banquet was a masterpiece, and the close-up shots of the food preparation were captivating. The camera lingering on a character’s face during an emotional moment heightened the scene beautifully. During those moments of unbroken, intense, silent gaze, I felt Yi Heon’s torment, Ji-young’s tenderness, and the palace storm lurking beneath the surface.
Then there’s the Original Soundtrack. The music was emotional, sweeping, and perfectly timed. The music elevated the scenes. During heartfelt conversations, there were quiet instrumentals, and when characters were longing, the music would swell. The soundtrack was incredibly appropriate for the entire drama. Even now, for certain scenes, I remember melodies.
Bon Appétit Your Majesty Kdrama: The Ending (Spoiler Free)

Endings are always tricky, especially for a drama that builds itself on fate, time travel, and love that seems impossible. Without revealing details, I’ll say that the ending gave me what I was hoping for: closure, hope, and a sense of destiny fulfilled. It was beautiful and emotional, tying back to promises made earlier in the story.
That said, I do wish the drama had explained certain elements a bit more clearly. While I loved how it wrapped up the romance, there were unanswered questions about the “how” and “why” behind some events. It didn’t ruin my satisfaction, but it did feel like a small gap in an otherwise seamless experience.
Still, the emotional impact far outweighed those tiny flaws. The ending reminded me that sometimes love doesn’t need every answer; it just needs faith, memory, and a promise kept.
Overall Thoughts and Rating

I didn’t want Bon Appétit Your Majesty to end, and the journey to watch it was a pleasure. It had a lot of what I adore in a drama: epic romance, unforgettable characters, heart-stopping moments, food that told its own stories, and a romance that felt both tender and epic. It helped me to reflect on love and history and how both shape us. It made me laugh and cry.
I’m giving it 4.75/5 stars. The ending made incomplete explanations, and that is why I am cutting 0.25. The rating doesn’t change how much I love the drama. It is rare to find a show that so perfectly combines food, comedy, and romance, along with palace intrigue! I will remember this drama for a long time.
Would I recommend it? Yes! If you enjoy romance with more depth and a history twist, as well as stories where food is a love language, you should watch this drama.
Bon Appétit Your Majesty was a complete meal and very satisfying, and it lingered with us. Now, we’d like to hear from you! Please, leave a comment and let’s reminisce about this wonderful drama.
