There are passionate love stories, and there are love stories that are dark, all-consuming, and impossible to escape from. Gena Showalter’s The Darkest Secret is that kind of story. The novel is the seventh instalment of the Lords of the Underworld series, and it explores pain, longing, and love and hate.
I expected paranormal romance but in reality it was that and then some. It was an emotional rollercoaster filled with tragic characters, with no chance of a happy ending, and even heart-shattering decisions to be made. Amun and Haidee’s story was not just romance, but it was also about survival and finding hope and light in the darkest, most unfathomable places. This book was truly wonderful.

About the Darkest Secret Book
The Darkest Secret book follows Amun, the keeper of the demon of Secrets, a burden that isolates him in ways no one else can truly understand. His power allows him to hear and manipulate the darkest thoughts of others, making him both dangerous and deeply alone. To protect those he loves, Amun chooses isolation, even if it slowly destroys him. Captured and imprisoned, he sees death as his only escape from the torment within his mind.
That is, until he meets Haidee, a fierce and deadly demon assassin who has been raised to hate Amun and his kind. She is strong, determined, and bound by a lifetime of vengeance, but beneath her hardened exterior lies vulnerability she desperately tries to hide.
Thrown together as prisoners, Amun and Haidee are forced into close proximity, where hatred begins to blur into something far more dangerous. Their connection is immediate, intense, and completely forbidden. As they navigate their shared captivity, they must also confront their pasts, their beliefs, and the undeniable pull between them.
But love in their world comes at a cost. To save Amun, Haidee must risk everything, including her life and face powerful enemies who will stop at nothing to destroy them both.
The Darkest Secret Book Review
Amun – A Beautifully Tortured Hero
Amun’s character I adored. There is so much to be said about a hero that suffers with deep emotional, mental and psychological trauma and then still makes the conscious decision to extend that trauma by sacrificing himself to protect and serve others. His demon power, which goes by the name of Secrets, sounds cool and fun but actually serves to be a curse that keeps him isolated and quiet, even from the closest of his peers.
What stood out to me about Amun was his quiet suffering. He doesn’t lash out. He doesn’t cry for sympathy. He simply endures. The emotional toll of breaking off from the pack to let others stay safe is a heavy burden. He keeps his distance from others to protect them, and you can feel his pain, his suffering, and how much he wants a real connection.
Haidee – Wrapped in Strength and Conflict
Haidee is not a typical heroine, and that is what makes her the most intriguing. She’s strong and she independently trained herself to kill, but she is also conflicted. And she has every right to be, given that her whole life has been built on hatred for Amun’s kind.
But with Amun, all of her beliefs begin to crack. Her internal struggle was definitely my favourite part of the story. You can feel the resistance and confusion. The fear that comes from starting to see Amun not as an enemy but simply as a man is real. It is messy, and it is emotional.
The thing I liked most about it is that her strength is not just physical but also emotional. Choosing to love when everything else tells you not to is brave.
Peak Dark Romance
This book is the definition of dark paranormal romance books. Amun and Haidee’s chemistry is obvious from the start, but it is not love at first sight; it is a slow burn that takes time to build from every interaction.
Desire, conflict, and emotional vulnerability are the key components of their relationship. The depth of the enemies-to-lovers trope is incredible, and it is a bonus that their hatred is not just surface level; it is based on their history, their grief, and what they have been taught to believe.
There are some spicy scenes, but the emotional connection behind it is what makes it stand out. It makes everything feel meaningful, which amplifies the intensity of the romance.
Plot, Writing and Atmosphere
For my Gena Showalter book review, her writing is engaging and emotionally rich. She makes you feel the passion and pain of the characters. The setting and the strong pacing of the writing create a sense of urgency and intensity in the story.
The feeling of danger is real; danger isn’t only coming from enemies but also from the characters’ own struggles internally. And danger from the story stepping from the pages. I would have also pointed out that some parts felt a little rushed towards the end, but it really didn’t take anything away from the experience.
Final Thoughts
The Darkest Secret is an incredible entry into the Lords of the Underworld series. All the dark paranormal romance fans will find Amun and Haidee’s story edgy, and the romance equally compelling.
The journey is not easy, but that is why it is so captivating. It is a story of breaking barriers, defying expectations, and of love that is difficult to embrace.
For those who love romance and deep stories, this volume is a book to add to your collection. It is recommended for fans who are already reading the series and those who are new to this world.
