Some K-dramas will entertain you for a few weekend evenings. Others will stay in your heart, far beyond the finale. True Beauty is one of those rare K-dramas.
I recently watched True Beauty after so many recommendations from K-drama fans. I reached the finale and understood why the True Beauty K-drama is one of the most well-loved romantic comedies.
At first glance, True Beauty looks like a light-hearted high school romance K-drama. It is those things, plus a heartfelt story of self-worth and learning to love yourself. Let’s dive into the review.
True Beauty K-Drama: Plot Overview
Lim Ju Gyeong has spent most of her school life being bullied because of her appearance. The constant criticism destroys her confidence, leaving her convinced that she’ll never be accepted for who she truly is.
Determined to leave her painful past behind, Ju Gyeong learns professional makeup techniques through YouTube tutorials. Her incredible transformation turns her into one of the prettiest girls in school almost overnight. Classmates admire her, boys notice her, and suddenly she receives the attention she never imagined possible.
But beneath the flawless makeup lies the same insecure girl terrified that someone might discover her real face.
Her carefully built world begins to change after meeting Lee Su Ho, a quiet, intelligent student carrying emotional scars of his own. Unlike everyone else, Su Ho sees Ju Gyeong without makeup, yet never judges her. Instead, he accepts her exactly as she is.
Adding another layer to the story is Han Seo Jun, whose charismatic personality and unwavering loyalty make him impossible not to love. The friendships, rivalries, misunderstandings, and emotional growth among the characters create a wonderfully balanced coming-of-age story that goes far beyond a typical love triangle.
Rather than focusing solely on romance, True Beauty explores what it truly means to find confidence in yourself while navigating adolescence and first love.
True Beauty Cast: Every Character Feels Real
One of True Beauty’s biggest strengths revolves around its memorable cast.
Lim Ju Gyeong – Learning to Accept Herself
Mun Ka Young delivers one of the best performances within the drama. Watching her slowly overcome years of insecurity was one of my favourite parts of the series. Her journey isn’t perfect or linear, which makes it even more believable.
She experiences setbacks, moments of fear, and plenty of self-doubt, but every experience helps her become stronger. Ju Gyeong’s character helps a lot of people who struggle with self-confidence.
Lee Su Ho – The Green Flag Everyone Wants
Cha Eun Woo perfectly portrays Lee Su Ho’s quiet personality and emotional depth. What made Su Ho my favourite character wasn’t simply his good looks. It was the way he loved Ju Gyeong from the very beginning, knowing exactly how she looked without makeup.
While everyone else admired the version she carefully created, Su Ho cared about the real person behind it. His support never feels controlling or overwhelming. Instead, he patiently encourages Ju Gyeong to become confident on her own terms.
Han Seo Jun – Impossible Not to Love
Even as someone firmly on Team Su Ho, I completely understand why Hwang In Youp became one of the most loved second leads in K-drama history.
Seo Jun’s powerful friendly rivalry with Su Ho offers emotional depth that transcends romance. Instead, he becomes a fully developed character with dreams and struggles of his own.
Supporting Cast
The supporting characters get their fair share of recognition as well.
Ju Gyeong’s family is warm and funny. This breaks up the heavier aspects of the drama and helps to keep the emotionally draining scenes to a minimum. Her friendships play a large role in the expression of what it means to be truly and fully accepted.
Her so-called ‘one-dimensional’ characters also come to demonstrate emotional complexity the further the story progresses.
True Beauty K-Drama Review: Why True Beauty Stands Out from Competition
Although romance has the largest draw of viewers, the themes of True Beauty are what make it memorable.
Beauty Standards and Self-Esteem
The difficult question the series asks of its audience:
What happens to people who love you only for what they perceive as your real self?
To Ju Gyeong’s reliance on make-up, vanity is not being portrayed. Instead, it’s being shown as a coping mechanism because of the years of bullying and resulting emotional trauma.
This portrayal approach makes her struggles realistic and not superficial. The most satisfying portion proved to be the portion where she came to understand that self-acceptance leads to true self-esteem.
Friendship and Family
Throughout the series, the friendships are wonderfully supportive and creatively hilarious.
This series prove that these supportively sincere friendships can stand side-by-side next to a sincere and sincerely supportive family to strengthen the emotional support structure of the series.
Mental Health and Growing Up
Another portion of the series that was fruitfully appreciated was the honestly emotional portion that created healing emotionally.
Certain characters of the series carry emotional scars, guilt, loneliness, or anxiety from certain trauma. Rather than magically disappearing overnight, they slowly learn to emotionally heal through personal growth.
Cinematography
True beauty is colourful and vivid.
Part of what makes this series so enjoyable is the balance between potential exaggeration and the school setting’s potential energy.
The drama’s major transformation scenes show off some seriously talented makeup artists. The drama hits the right message with the right amount of restraint; the right amount of drama is the right amount of drama.
OST
The soundtrack deserves some serious praise.
From the playful romantic songs to the emotional ballads, the songs perfectly balance the other scenes and provide the right song at the right time.
Even long after you finish the drama, several songs bring back memories of the characters and their emotional journeys.
High School Romance K-Drama: The Ending (Spoiler-Free)
Without giving any major spoilers, I was genuinely satisfied with how True Beauty concludes.
Many romance dramas struggle to balance important closure with fan expectations, but this series manages to wrap up its central story in a hopeful, rewarding manner.
One moment that stayed with me throughout the series was when Ju Gyeong’s real appearance became public. Instead of simply creating drama for the sake of shocking viewers, the situation became a turning point for her emotional growth.
Rather than focusing only on the romance, the ending emphasises personal acceptance, healing, and becoming comfortable with who you truly are.
It left me smiling, not because everything was magically perfect, but because the characters had genuinely grown into stronger versions of themselves.
Overall Thoughts & Rating – ★★★★☆
If someone asked me whether True Beauty is worth watching, my answer would be an easy yes.
This heartfelt romantic comedy blends all the elements that fans have come to expect from a romantic comedy: the delightful combination of chemistry, wit, and lovable characters makes for charming and hilarious moments.
As a huge fan of Lee Su Ho, I have to say that my favourite part of this romantic comedy was Lee Su Ho’s unconditional love for Ju Gyeong.
‘True Beauty’ becomes more than a simple makeup tale by the end. It’s a tale of a girl’s first steps on the path toward real self-worth and learning that your self-confidence can change your world and help you accomplish great things.
This is really the drama to watch if you are looking to watch something that is really comedic and worth laughing at; has moments that will make you swoon and cringe and moments that really soothe your anxious heart and a really overarching theme and message that cements the worth of true beauty and self-value and self-worth.
