The Darkest Touch By Gena Showalter Book Review: Forbidden Touch

The Darkest Touch BY Gena Showalter Book Review: Forbidden Touch

What if the one thing you’ve desired for a long time is also the one thing that could ruin everything?

You’re not prepared for this sort of unbelievable, heart-wrenching, rollercoaster ride that is The Darkest Touch by Gena Showalter. For those following the Lords of the Underworld Series, every new release is full of surprises, but Torin’s book is especially unique.

Not any other ordinary love story. This book is full of detail, emotional strain, tension, and the ability to hold on. It is so incredibly good and bound to become one of the best on your shelf.

Gena Showalter, I owe you one for this gift.

About the Darkest Touch Book

The Darkest Touch book centres around Torin, one of the most intriguing warriors in the series. Known as the keeper of the demon Disease, Torin lives a life unlike any of his fellow Lords.

While others battle external enemies, Torin’s greatest threat is himself because a single touch from him can unleash sickness, devastation, and even global catastrophe. Physical intimacy? Completely off-limits.

For centuries, he has maintained strict control, isolating himself emotionally and physically. But everything changes when Keeley Cael, also known as the Red Queen, enters his life. Keeley is powerful, unpredictable, and carries her scars from a long and painful imprisonment.

From the moment they meet, there’s an undeniable connection between them, one that is both irresistible and dangerous. Their dynamic is built on longing, restraint, and the constant awareness that giving in to their feelings could have irreversible consequences.

Set within the richly built world of immortal warriors, demons, and ancient curses, the story seamlessly blends romance with fantasy. It continues the overarching narrative of the series while delivering a deeply personal and emotional love story that stands strong on its own.

The Darkest Touch Review

Torin: Most Heart-wrenching Lord

Let’s begin with Torin, who, if I’m honest, is a man who’s earned the world. Out of all the Lords, his curse feels most lacking. Watching him be forced to touch no one and be able to hurt anyone is heartbreaking.

What I loved most was the facade of his emotional control. The way this man has trained himself to outlive a touch, a simple and basic need for some sort of love and comfort, and a connection with a human, adds so many facets to the character. When the control begins to fade, you sense it.

Torin’s control is freely and easily the bestest. It’s heartbreaking, and I can’t help but root for him.

Keeley: A Perfect Match

Keeley Cael, the Red Queen, is everything I wanted and more. She’s powerful, fierce, and a little chaotic, but beneath all that strength, the rest of the story’s vulnerability of her character is relatable.

Torin’s boundaries not only get pushed by Keeley; they get questioned by her. She forces the emotionally buried Torin of centuries to confront those feelings. Her character is emotionally layered.

Emotional Depth That Hits Hard

When it comes to emotional storytelling, blending it with fantasy, Showalter is the best. The Darkest Touch Gena Showalter has all the components. It has love, but it also has loneliness.

Torin and Keeley both have emotional wounds they have to work on and navigate together. That’s what really hit the hardest, I think, and apparently I had felt that.

World-Building & Series Connection

This, the Darkest Touch, is integrated nicely with the rest of the Lords of the Underworld series. Torin’s and Keeley’s story has more depth because we see some other characters and storylines.

The combination of mythology, immortality, and emotional storytelling is one of the series’ strongest elements.

Final Thoughts

The Darkest Touch is everything this series’ fans want. Keeley’s and Torin’s story is a love story filled with longing, wounds, and a love that seems impossible and inevitable.

If you have read the other books in the series, you will feel right at home with this one. And if you were like me and always curious about Torin, this is the book you were waiting for.

If you love slow-burn, romance, and deeply emotional character arcs, this book is for you. Even after you’ve read the last page of the book, this story lingers in your head.
