I was excited to see My Lovely Liar added to Netflix for good reason, as its premise caught my eye. This is a story about a woman who has an ability to detect lies but struggles with trust, which offers a fun twist on this romance thriller.
The combination of this premise with the talent of Kim So-Hyun as the character Mok Sol-Hee and Hwang Min-Hyun as Kim Do-ha provides more than just a romance and thriller. This series is an exploration of all sorts of complex pieces of the human condition, such as trust, and more. Is there a murder mystery too? Of course!
I love the mix of tension and emotion in this series. It’s not every day you come across a series where you cheer for the love story and get nervous for the murder mystery. I found myself asking how a person who is cursed with the ability to tell when someone is lying finds inner peace and love.
My Lavely Liar Kdrama Overview

At its core, My Lovely Liar follows Mok Sol-Hee, a young woman burdened with a rare gift: she can detect when someone is lying. While this might seem like an extraordinary skill, for Sol-Hee, it is more of a curse. Her ability has forced her to build emotional walls, unable to fully trust even the people closest to her.
Her world shifts when she meets Kim Do-ha, a man accused of a serious crime. Despite the suspicions surrounding him, he insists on his innocence. Sol-Hee’s unique ability becomes central to uncovering the truth and navigating the complex web of deception around them.
The drama is perfectly structured, with the first half focusing on the slow-burn romance between Sol-Hee and Do-ha and the second half evolving into a gripping thriller. I was hooked by the moment Sol-Hee detects a lie from Do-ha, an episode that felt like a turning point.
Lines like “If I say it’s true, it’s true” perfectly capture Sol-Hee’s worldview and her unique way of perceiving truth and lies. These moments emphasise the stakes of every interaction and add depth to the unfolding plot.
My Lovely Liar Netflix: Characters & Performances
Kim So-Hyun’s portrayal of Mok Sol-Hee was simply convincing. Watching her navigate the complexities of someone gifted yet burdened by truth detection was fascinating. The emotional depth she brought to the character made Sol-Hee feel real.
Her line, “Do you know what the most common lie is? ‘It’s okay’,” struck me particularly. It highlighted her observant nature and her ability to perceive the subtle, everyday deceptions people use to mask their true feelings. Kim So-Hyun’s performance made me empathise with her struggles and celebrate her growth as she slowly learns to trust and open up to Do-ha.
Hwang Min-Hyun, as Kim Do-ha, was equally impressive. He portrayed a man caught in a web of suspicion while maintaining a calm, grounded demeanour that made me question and root for him simultaneously.
There’s a quiet intensity to his acting that balanced Sol-Hee’s more expressive emotional arcs. Together, their chemistry felt completely natural. The romantic moments between them were understated yet deeply moving, especially in scenes that felt intimate without being over the top.
The romantic tension escalates beautifully in Sol-Hee’s heartfelt line, “I could only prove it to you if you lied to me left and right. But you never lied. That’s why I liked you.” I found myself genuinely touched by the sincerity and vulnerability in that moment. It wasn’t just about romance; it reflected the drama’s central theme of trust and the emotional barriers both characters had to overcome.
Even though the supporting cast didn’t have as much screen time, characters like Cho Deuk-chan, Shaon, and Lee Kang-min added texture to the story without overwhelming the main narrative. Each character’s interactions helped highlight the challenges of trust and deception in their respective ways, allowing the leads’ arcs to shine.
My Lovely Liar Kdrama Review: Themes, Cinematography, OST
One of the things I loved about “My Lovely Liar” was how it depicted trust and taking chances. Seeing Sol-Hee try to work through her problem and slowly learn to trust Do-ha was interesting and a change for most romance series.
It was also nice to see the realism within her thoughts when she said stuff like, “People really don’t care about people as much as you think; they care about themselves and live their own lives,” and it gave the series some realism. It was nice to remember that struggling with problems and fighting battles, we tend to forget the problems others are going through and the battles they are fighting.
The cinematography also made me love the series even more. Close-ups and Interleaved lighting made me feel like I was in the room with the characters and made the moments suspenseful. The lighting and the cinematography made the gap between deception and truth and the ending more satisfying.
The Original Sound Track (OST) enhanced the story, romance, and suspense without overwhelming them. It also captured a lot of the emotional and more private moments between Sol-Hee and Do-Ha and helped build my emotional connection to the show.
My Lovely Liar: The Ending (Spoiler-Free)
The ending of My Lovely Liar was pleasing and not frustrating at all, as all the important storylines and threads were closed, and the different resolutions captured the appropriate levels of closure and emotion. I was especially happy for the characters and appreciated the lessons I learned from their journeys.
The last few episodes represented one of the important lessons of the drama, which is that trust is hard to earn and maintain, but it is so very valuable. This was especially highlighted by Sol-Hee’s experiences and her unique challenges and her gifts.
Overall Thoughts
My Lovely Liar K-drama has everything I love! Sweet romance, intense suspense, and well-developed characters! I think the cast in this show was literally perfect! Kim So Hyun and Hwang Min Hyun made the lead characters’ struggles and triumphs so believable.
The exploration of trust, deception, and second chances left a lasting impression. Lines like “I could only prove it to you if you lied to me left and right. But you never lied. That’s why I liked you” and “If I say it’s true, it’s true” captured the essence of the drama, adding layers of emotion and meaning to the story.
