K-dramas are usually entertaining, but some are a bit deeper and make you think once you finish them. In my case, “May I Help You?” is that kind of drama. I found this drama by accident while scrolling social media and I was intrigued by the cover and the comments.
The thing that captured my attention the most was the intriguing premise of the show, which is about a funeral director who speaks with deceased people and grants them a last wish before they transition.
May I Help You? stars Hyeri, who is as warm as always, plays Baek Dong-Joo, a funeral director with many responsibilities. Lee Jun-Young (Kim Tae-Hee), a kind person who performs menial jobs, is a central character in the show.
“May I Help You” exceeded my expectations with its 16 episodes, which offered a blend of laughter, hidden healing, and soft-spoken wisdom.
May I Help You Kdrama Plot Overview
May I Help You Kdrama focuses on living, loving, and saying goodbyes. Baek Dong-Joo, played by Hyeri, has the unique gift of speaking to the dead. Every spirit she encounters possesses a final wish that requires resolution. If she does not complete these wishes, Dong-Joo suffers some horrible fate, and so she takes these matters seriously in helping the spirits attain peace.
On the other end, Lee Jun-Young portrays Kim Tae-Hee, an employee at his uncle’s odd-job company, “A Dime A Job.” Tae-Hee’s daily schedule is filled with tiny services, such as changing lightbulbs and running errands.
Each instance enhanced the overall story, intertwining tales of love, regret, and reconciliation with destiny. This is why watching the entire series in one sitting was both an emotional and comforting experience.
May I Help You Kdrama Cast
Baek Dong-Joo (Hyeri)
Even from her first scene, Baek Dong-Joo captured my interest. She has the difficult task of helping the dead to their last resting place but does so with empathy. Dong-Joo is a complex character, but Hyeri did a wonderful job with the role. It is compelling to see someone struggling with the pain that comes with grief and still providing hope to the hopeless.
Kim Tae-Hee (Lee Jun-Young)
If the show centres around Dong-Joo, then Tae-Hee is the anchor. Lee Jun-Young infused Tae-Hee with a calm warmth that very much balanced Hyeri’s vibrancy. I thought that their chemistry was real, regardless of whether they were having lighter interactions or struggling with heavier concepts.
Baek Dal-Sik (Park Soo-Young)
Out of all the supporting characters, the one who caught my attention the most was Baek Dal-Sik. The way he interacted with Tae-Hee was loving and funny as well. These moments helped lighten the otherwise serious themes of the show.
Vincent (Lee Gyu-Han) & Others
Vincent, who is Tae-hee’s uncle and the owner of A Dime A Job, also brought humour to the series. The way he blended comedy with occasional heavy themes kept things captivating. Other side characters such as Im Il-Seob also helped enhance the story’s world, making sure that no one was a weak addition to the narrative.
May I Help You Kdrama Review: Themes, Cinematography And OST
Themes
The two themes that stood out to me were human connection and fate. The episodes, while fictional, felt as though they were fragile and attempted to remind you of the delicate yet beautiful aspects of existence. The stories of the dead were not merely plot points. Instead, they were soft illustrations embraced by the living about love, forgiveness, and progress.
I felt touched by the stories of the dying and the “last wish” that their families remembered them by. The request from the pregnant wife was painful yet beautiful, while that of Dong-Joo’s friend’s grandma gave me a different type of tear. These scenes were not just heart-wrenching. They were profound in their ability to teach the importance of living in the moment and letting go.
Cinematography
From a visual perspective, the series May I Help You? has a number of key features. The episode that had the afterlife walks, in particular, was one of the most striking in the entire series. Each walk felt poetic and offered symbolic anatomy, gently shifting from one world to the next with exquisite refinement.
OST
A crossword puzzle would not be complete without its soundtrack, and this one performed exceptionally well. The music accompanied these moments, whether it was a heartbreaking goodbye or a warm interaction between characters. I would still go back and listen to the other tracks because they nailed the emotion the drama was going for.
May I Help You Drama Ending and Overall Thoughts
The endings of dramas can determine their success, and I was surprised that May I Help You still managed to succeed. Without revealing any spoilers, I can say that the last episode was a gift to both the characters and the plot, as it avoided pointless loops and completely shattered elements.
While watching May I Help You, I noticed that the show combined elements of fantasy and drama, but it also explored deeper themes regarding the relationships between life and death. It also encouraged me to live more fully to avoid having regrets in the future.
The show was very touching and brilliantly put together, even if it is not perfect. No one is to be turned away from it in the first place, since the themes can apply to everyone, including those of closeness, love, and healing. If I had to put a star rating on it, I would say 4 out of 5 stars.
Just like every other drama, May I Help You also contains important life lessons, such as the significance of respecting the bonds and connections we make as we go through life. We would like to know if you watched it, what you thought, and if it sparked any emotions.
